The Auburn University at Montgomery Department of Communication Disorders offers a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP).

Speech-language pathologists work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

The Department’s vision is to develop a distinguished, sustainable speech-language pathology graduate program that prepares graduates for licensure and certification, provides excellence in clinical service, and becomes an indispensable community partner that contributes to the health and well-being of citizens across the Alabama Southeast region and beyond.

This is an online program that strives to foster an innovative, intellectually stimulating student-centred learning environment, both academically and clinically, founded upon active learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, self-analysis, research-based discovery, the highest ethical and professional standards, accountability, community engagement, commitment to social justice, diversity and global awareness, and commitment to evidence-based life-long learning. Admission Requirements

  • Hold an earned Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders or related field
  • Apply to AUM send Official Transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
  • Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 GPA in CMDS coursework
  • GRE Score of 290 preferred
  • A personal interview
  • Three professional letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement

Pre-Requisite Coursework for Non-Related Fields

Those who have and communication sciences courses including: anatomy and physiology of speech, language, and hearing; phonetics, speech and hearing science; language acquisition and development; audiology; and neurological bases of speech, language, and hearing.

For those students holding degrees in an unrelated field. The following “leveling” courses must be completed.

  • Speech and Hearing Science
  • Anatomy & Physiology of Speech
  • Language Development
  • Phonetics
  • Neurological Basis for Speech Language and Hearing
  • Introduction to Audiology
  • 25 Hours of Observation

In the case of students completing the leveling courses, one additional year will be added to the length of the program. Once all leveling courses have been successfully completed and observation hours obtained, the student may begin the tracked curriculum for the MS-SLP program.

Students interested in the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology who do not hold an undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders, can complete the Speech and Hearing Sciences certificate. The certificate provides a solid foundation for those interested in graduate school. Course offerings are online and asynchronous.

Working While Enrolled in MS-SLP Program

Students enrolled in the program must obtain minimum of 400 clock hours in direct patient contact. These hours are obtained in a variety of settings and across diverse populations and varied differences/disorders/delays.

For those students who are employed as speech-language pathology assistants, it may be possible to earn clock hours with appropriately documented supervision on the job, in cooperation with the MS-SLP program.

For those students employed full-time in non-speech related positions, it may be necessary to take a leave of absence from work, in order to earn the full 400 clock hours required. If that is not possible, graduation may be delayed to allow for completion of clock hours during the summer following completion of academic curriculum.

Candidacy is a “pre-accreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for 5 years.
